Darryl John Kroll

Honoring an Original Indian Cowboy
A few years ago, Nugget was on Facebook, stirring things up, as he does. A lady by the name of Jonni Kroll got caught in Nugget’s debate. As Nugget says, “she was on a roll”, so he debated with her. They later found out that her husband, Darryl Kroll, was Nugget’s cousin. From there, the rest is history, Nugget and Jonni sparked a friendship. Nugget is a proud descendant of Chewing Black Bones and talks fondly of his memories of him as he was growing up. Jonni is an expert historian, she is great with family lineage, which she shared with Nugget.
Nugget told Jonni that he wanted to meet Darryl, Nugget remembers Darryl being much smaller in person. Darryl was a presence, he served his country as a medic in the Army, Nugget imagined him as big as the persona Darryl embodied. Darryl came into Nugget’s life at exactly the right time, Darryl was an Elder, also a descendant of Chewing Black Bones. Nugget recalled his automatic respect for Darryl as an Elder, Darryl was there to listen. Nugget spent time with Darryl just visiting, Darryl’s words made Nugget feel like he was not alone anymore.
As time passed, Jonni and Darryl told Nugget that they considered him a son. Which is exactly what Nugget was looking for, Elders to help guide him, just like his Elders did.
Darryl was one of the bravest men Nugget said he has ever met. Darryl’s grit was reminiscent of old Mad Plume, strong and fighting through the pain. Darryl was always there for Nugget and his family; he became an adopted father to Nugget. Darryl and Jonni stepped up and became Elders to Nugget’s family.
Last year, Darryl wanted to make it Mother’s Day rodeo, he was so excited to be a part of the event that means so much to the Mad Plume family. Sadly, Darryl got very sick, and he passed away just days before Mother’s Day. Darryl made Jonni promise that he would get a hold of Nugget, he wanted him to know how much he cared.
Nugget says he is happy to still have Jonni, who calls to check on him every day, just like his mother Penny used to.
Jonni is sponsoring the Bareback in Memory of her beloved husband, Darryl Kroll. Join us on May 12th, 2024, as we celebrate a legend of a man as he leaves his legacy of respect at Hell’s Half.
Darryl John Kroll, 63, left this world May 15th, 2023, surrounded by his loving wife of twenty-something years and his children at Holy Family Hospital in Spokane, Washington. He is proceeded in death by his parents—June and Arthur Bowles; brother—AJ Kroll; and son—Jason Kroll.  Darryl is survived by his wife, Jonni Kroll and children; Nugget Madplume (Diana Burd); Joshua Kroll (Tabitha Kroll); Jackie Smith (Andrew Smith); Jordan Kroll (Julia Kroll); Jessica Gerlett (position available). As far as we can tell, Darryl had 23 grandchildren.
Darryl “Pops” Kroll was the second baby born January 1st, 1960, in Helena, Montana. He spent his childhood tormenting his parents in the quaint town of Drummond, Montana. Upon graduating high school, he served in the Army as a medic. After the Army, Darryl couldn’t quite decide what to do—so he did it all. The majority of his later working years were spent core drilling in the Pacific Northwest where he met his wife and settled down—kind of. Gail Leeper, Darryl’s younger sister, recalls shortly after he met Jonni and her daughters he confided in her that the relationship “excites me and scares me at the same time, so I thought it may be a good idea to try”. Turned out trying was a smart choice on his part as the two married and lived a happy 22 years together. Darryl and his wife moved to Spokane, Washington in the summer of 2013 then relocated to Deer Park, Washington in 2020. Deer Park was their ideal town and together Darryl and his wife enjoyed lunch at their favorite cafés, afternoon drives through the countryside, and watching their little dogs play in the backyard
